Longies pattern

Here are some longies pattern I drafted. You will need to add the seam allowance. The newborn is pretty small. It will fit much better made with wool than with fleece. I was able to do this with the help of a wonderful tutorial made by Stefanie (aliandmimismom) on Diaper Swappers. http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=508956

Please add a seam allowance to these patterns except for the waistbands. I have not tested all of these patterns, so sew at your own risk. :)

Do you like the patterns? Feel free to make a small donation.

The pink ones are fleece NB longies. All others are wool/lycra blend interlock in various custom sizes. The best place to buy wool interlock (IMO) is Nature's Fabrics.

OH WOW! I was just on here a few hours ago double checking some things as I was preparing to sew. I don't even remember now why I came back here - I've got pictures of beautiful newborn longies floating in my head! Thanks for sharing!! I'll be checking back for more pattern updates soon...

Katrina said...

You are welcome! It may take me a bit to get them all ready, but I'm working on medium, large, and xlarge patterns right now. I don't have a problem drafting them, just getting them into the PDF format.

The waistbands and NB link seem to be one link, but when I click on it, it just goes to the waistband .pdf. Could you fix this or just email me the NB .pdf? Thanks! My email is thewaggonerfamily at gmail dot com.

Katrina said...

I fixed the link. Thanks for letting me know.

On pins and needles for your xlarge longie pattern. You rock for letting people have these patterns!!!

Hi, again! I'm new to using fleece covers/pants and have a few questions. Do you wash and dry fleece in/on hot? With the diapers or with the babies clothes? What do you do for the pilling? Can you use fleece more than once and how do you know it's time to wash? (I know it's not like wool, but just didn't know if it could only be used over a diaper once before it needs washing.)

I made your cover pattern from start to finish in 45 mins the other night! Wonderful! I'm going to try it on some scrap wool here pretty soon. It's honestly the first diaper/cover pattern that went together as fast as promised!!! I was completely thrilled...

Blessings.

Katrina said...

Anna,
You wash fleece with your other baby clothes. I have heard that using fabric softener helps fleece to be more moisture repellent. I buy anti-pill fleece, but you can use a clothes shaver for pilling. I alternate between a couple of fleece covers in a day, and then wash them both. I wash sooner if it gets stinky or poop on it.

Thank you so much for sharing!!!

Are the pants higher in the back than in the front? They look a little like they are, which would be great b/c they would fit over a diaper better!!!

Blessings,
Hope

Katrina said...

Yes, the pants are higher in the back. :)

I love, love, love this pattern! I made the medium size for my 10 month old nephew and we tried CDing for the first time tonight with this cover. After two hours, we checked the diaper. It was soaked, but the longies were dry and my nephew was still happy as a clam. I am going to make several of each size for my own kids! Thank you so much for this pattern, it looked so cute on him!

Unknown said...

Oh, and it only took me 10 minutes to make the longies from cutting to finish. Granted, I am very crafty, but your pattern is very straightforward and easy to sew. Thanks again!

Alexa said...

Hi, I don't know you at all, but came across this great pattern and just have a novice question for you: How did you make the ruffle on the NB longies? It's so cute for a little girl!

Katrina said...

Alexa,

I used a tight zig zag stitch and pulled a little as I went. You could do it with the serger, too.

Does this pattern work with non-stretchy wool fabric like wool flannel, or does it need something like interlock to fit properly?

Katrina said...

I think it will work fine for wool flannel except for the waistband. I would add an inch or so at the top and make a casing for elastic for a non-stretchy fabric.

Justine said...

Hi, Thanks for doing this, looks awesome! I'm not a great sewer, but want some longies for my dd so am going to be brave.
Do I need to use a stretchy fleece or would it work with just normal fleece? I don't know much about this stuff :)
Thanks for being so generous...

Hey Thanks so much! Just wanted to share how I went tonight having a go. I made a medium for my small 15 mo dd. Because I'm using fleece I didn't do waistband & added 1inch for putting in elastic, but they were still pretty short in the rise. So I undid elastic bit & made a waistband instead & now they're a good length. But prob too small for dd. We have really bulky nappies (tots bots fluffies). So I made the large, but thought it still looked small so added about 2 inch for elastic foldover & also added 1 inch for the 'width' of the leg (I cheated, just left the edge of the paper next to the red line instead of cutting it off).
They looked great. I then made another layer (for extra absorption) for both pairs by cutting out some 'shorts' from the pattern, minus any inseam length. I stitched that on near the waist, but left it hanging free for drying quickly.
I thought I'd share in case this benefits anyone else.
I'm so excited that it worked, as I'm no great sewer! I even got the Lettuce edging to work. woohoo. Thanks again.

Justine said...

Hi, just an update, now I've tried the longies on DD.
The smaller pair (Medium, with a slightly longer rise) DO fit her big fluffy nappies. To my surprise!!! :)
They look a bit like grandpa pants cos they come so high up her waist, but this is good cos the fleece isn't very stretchy to keep the pants up!
The others are way huge, but will be fine with some elastic.
Just in case anyone else is experimenting.
Thanks again Katrina :)

I'm not sure what I did, but this pattern did not turn out for me at all. I did the MED and I don't even know how to describe how bad they turned out. Do you know what I did wrong? Maybe I can email you pic and you can tell me??

Erin said...

I can't seem to get the links to work. :-( I really wanted to try some of the longies!! I love your soaker pattern! You are wonderful for sharing!

ChrissyLou said...

Are there instructions on how to sew these ones? And are shorties only shorter? Awesome and thanks!

mommymine said...

Hi Katrina,

This is a sweet pattern i like the add your own length that way if baby is super short but chubby it has a better fit (that would be mine lol). Can I make these longies to sell (I've made some super cute ones with lace accent). Anyways... I would definately put some up ffs or my local diaper store is actually starting a charity for mommas that want to cloth but can't afford the startupo and I was going to donate some to tahat. What do you think?

Katrina said...

I don't care if you sell from the patterns. I think donating a pair to your local charity would be wonderful!

For those of you having difficulties, I will try to get a photo tutorial up when I find time. Remember that unlike the soaker patterns, these do not include a seam allowance.

Heidi Maxwell said...

OMG! TY for a great pattern! I have just made some from a pattern I created myself, but yours looks even better!

Thank you so much for your generousity in sharing irst the soaker pattern and now the longies pattern also! Just wanted tolet you know that in the XL size pdf both pieces are marked "A" - hope you enjoy a blessed Christmas with your family - R

Would the longies pattern work with felted thrift store sweaters?

Debra said...

This works wonderful for thrift store sweaters. I have made several longies and soakers too for my grandson and love the patterns. Super easy and fast to sew up new pants when he needs a new pair. I will be working on the size large this weekend as he has finally outgrown the mediums. Thanks for sharing your pattern.

Unknown said...

Thanks, Debra--great to know it will work! I am a knitter, but sewing is SO much faster, and cheaper too, with recycled sweaters.

Thanks for the patterns, Katrina!

Cbarron604 said...

Are there any directions to go with this longies pattern? I am not great at figuring out patterns without step by step directions...I am really looking forward to trying to make these, though. Thanks.

Katrina said...

If you click on the Diaper Swappers link and scroll past the pics where she shows how to draft your own pattern, you will see the pictures that show you how to sew the longies.

Allison said...

just wanted to let you know that I love your pattern, and thank you for sharing it! I'v made 5 pairs - 3 of which are pictured here: http://www.sewingmamas.com/b/showthread.php?t=131060

I made the large, and they fit Kian well - he's just going into a 2T and large diaper. The small fit my 13.5 pound 2.5mo well, with just enough room to grow. She's right between a medium and small diaper right now.

I love your simple but effective pattern, thanks for sharing, I've made a lot using it!

But: Wjat's wrong with the Xlarge link, it doesn't work - could you email me that specific size?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks so much for this post! I am new to sewing, but I think I got this :) I do have a quick question for you though...the waistband what do you use for material? Also you have 4 in so that is prior to folding it in half correct? I know I am sounding rather stupid, but I'd rather have it correct than make them and waste my project. Thannks!!!

Katrina said...

I use the same material for the waistband as I do for the rest of the longies. I have always used something stretchy like fleece or wool interlock. If I were to use a less stretchy material, I would put an elastic waistband in. Yes, the 4" is before it's folded. You can always adjust the waistband to suit you, though. I make them shorter if I have a really stretchy material. They fit better that way.

Goddess Mama said...

OK sorry to bug you again. I was wondering how you made the scalloped hem in the first pair of pink longies. I cannot figure out how to do that and I think it looks rather girlie and I like it. Thanks!

ChrissyLou said...

Stretch the fabric as you (narrow)zigzag over the edge. When you release it, it will be scalloped. :-)

Kate said...

After making a couple of the soakers yesterday, I just HAD to stay up late to try the longies pattern. I used an old cardigan so they involved a bit more sewing than I had hoped for but they were a quick and very easy sew. Even for a beginner like me. I updated my blog and added a picture of the longies at the bottom if you're interested. http://cleaninup.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/homemade-wool-soaker-from-old-sweaters/

Thanks so much for the wonderful patterns!

Katrina said...

You're welcome, Kate! You did a great job lining up the stripes on your longies. They look fantastic!

GV said...

Hi katrina,

I am looking for a longies pattern with a diamond piece at the crotch. Could these be modified?

Katrina said...

geet, I'm not sure. I've never made a pair of longies with a diamond piece at the crotch.

Pamela said...

This is an awesome pattern! I just made my first pair and after cutting the pattern and fabric, it too me 10 minutes to sew. :) I made the medium for my 14 month old but used the large waist. ;) ... she's a bit chunky. :P Thanks so much!

Liz said...

Thank you for your free patterns! It makes CDing your LO way less expensive! Question for you, I love the longies with the "cuff" at the ankle. Did you just use the same pattern piece from the soaker legs or did you just whip it up on the fly? ;)

Katrina said...

If I recall correctly, I just made another waistband and cut it in half to make the two cuffs at the ankles.

Ladyinwaiting35 said...

Please explain what the purpose of the differing lengths between adjustment lines (dashed line) and lower edge of pattern piece on the front and back piece? I don't really understand that part?

Kate said...

Ladyinwaiting35 - the solid line represents the crotch line. The dashed line is the bottom of the leg so you lengthen it to whatever inseam you need.

Ladyinwaiting35 said...

Ok I don't think I said that right.

What I meant to say is that the distance from SOLID line to bottom edge (dotted) is longer on front piece then on back piece.....so when I taped them together (at vertical dotted line) they didnt match up. So essentially one pattern piece was longer than the other.

I sewed it anyway... I just forced them to match up by making the shorter one longer. But the crotch area is a bit wonky on her.. (tight up front) I don't know what I did wrong???

These are sew cute! Pun intended! I made one from a very thin sweater I couldn't get to felt. It was a nice merino so I knew it would be a good longie but not work well for night time use or naps even. So I remembered that Little Bird(I believe) had a pair that they sold? that had an attatched panty on the inside. So I decided to try this and it works perfectly and looks so very adorable! You could use the main part of your soaker pattern and sew side seems, roll hem and stitch in leg area and attatch to the waistband when attatching to the pant legs. Of course being the picky sewer I had to make sure the seems would not touch baby. They looked very professional. I can send you pics if you like :o)I am commenting in the hopes that another mom would benefit from the idea.

the links are not working on the longies. the soaker links are working fine though. Are they still available? thanks :)

Katrina said...

The links should be working again. :)

Unknown said...

I cant get the link to work on the longies still.

melissa said...

I'm looking at the wool interlock from Nature's Fabric - not sure if the feltable wool blend would be best, or the washable wool. Do you know? And would you purposely felt the wool first? I want my longies & soakers to be nice and stretchy. Thanks!

Katrina said...

Melissa,
I like the wool blends for stretchy wool. I do felt mine first. That way if it is accidentally washed in the machine, it won't shrink further (that's only for the wool blends). 100% wool loses stretch when felted.

Katrina said...

Pattern links from here should work, although I am not having difficulties with the ones in the blog.

Thank you so much for these patterns. They are a life saver for me. My potty trained 4 yo will still need night time diapering for the foreseeable future. I made the biggest size soaker, XXXL. Those fit. Will the XL longies be big enough? I am a novice sewer, so I am not sure how to make them bigger. I don't need them to be all the way to his ankles, but I am just concerned about the rise. Thank you!

Katrina said...

I believe the XL longies are similar in size to the XL soaker.

I have been using your patterns for years. I've had 4 in cloth and one on the way that will be using cloth as well. I just want to take a minute to tell you thank you for sharing your patterns!

I am SEW excited to try this pattern! Just a quick question, I am planning on using wool rib knit for the waist. Would you suggest sizing down the waist band since it is has a lot of stretch? Thank you!

Cara said...

I know this is an old post but I am hoping you are still responding to comments. I recently ordered some competency sections. I got some 300. And also there was this stay dry polar tech that is a fleece wool blend. I believe 70fleece 30 wool. Should I treat it as wool or fleece. Do I need to lanolize it and do you think it will shrink a lot. I would wash it on cold. Not sure what to do. Also it is very thin. Should I double it? It was very. Cheap so I got it to try it out. I made a few shakers from antipill fleece I had around the house from your pattern and I LOVE them and so does my son. He calls them his blankey covers:)

I made the Longies for a newborn, but it was way too small. It didn't even fit over a disposable nappy. Maybe it will fit a preemie or a doll. The one I made for my 18 months old granddaughter was just fine. I made the large pattern.
